While in Galveston working this past week, Dad and I snuck off to do a little fishing in West Bay. The Galveston Bay system is not exactly my backyard, and as I backed the boat down the ramp the first afternoon, I wondered if there was any water at the bottom. NE winds at 25 knots had blown a great deal of water out of the bay system, and what water was left in the marsh was very stirred up.
In an effort make the presence of my bait know in the muddy water, I tied on an Inticer cork From Midcoast Products. Midcoast cork's rigging design is different than any I had ever used. Rather than tie the leader to the bottom swivel of the cork, it is tied to the top swivel along with your main line. This allows you to throw the cork much farther, feel bites quicker, and get more efficient hook sets with an un-waited circle hook. The un-waited hook allows the bait to swim more freely and stay out of the grass and shell. The rig worked flawless! I will never tie to the bottom swivel again, and I think you will do the same if you give Midcoast Products corks a try.

Team Notorious in East Matty!
Team Notorious and Clint Sholmire in East Matty...look out, Redfishing fools, every one of us.
Thomas (texxan1) called up Clint on friday and said "whatcha doing saturday"...Clint said "Fishing with you, where we going?" Matty sounded good so we all piled in the truck at 4:30am and towed the Mosca to Sargent. It had been awhile for me since I last fished Matty so I was up at 3am with anticipation. Actually both Thomas and I were up. So we made a hearty breakfast instead of hitting bucees on the way.
We ran the ICW in the pre-dawn glow and headed over in the area where Clint and Thomas were into them last week. The duck hunters were in there pretty thick setting up so we moved down a couple coves and piled out of the boat. After a good wade, the bite wasnt on yet so we made a few drifts. Clint started picking up a trout here and there which we released while we waited for the hunters to clear out. Finally at about 11 we were able to pile out of the boat again for a wade and it was on!
We lined up and waded a slight gut where the fish were coming around a corner. Clint nailed the first slot red and then me. Then me again then Clint and then me the third time. I had my limit in about 20 minutes it seemed like. They were threatening to send me back to the boat, lol. We all found a bunch of rat reds mixed in with the keepers but Thomas was getting frustrated. Poor guy.
I was grinning from ear to ear and bugging Thomas when finally his turn came! I looked over at him and he had a nice trout hooked up. About a 6#er on the boga which he released and then a 4#er also released. He strung a slot red and a couple 21" or so trout. I had a nice 21" trout as well. The trout seemed to be out just a little past the reds. We progressed forward in a line but as fast as the bite turned on, it turned off again. All the action came between 11 and 1 on killer flats minnows. Clint who was closest to shore didnt get into the trout, I was in the middle and only caught one, Thomas was farthest out and found several nice trout but few reds.
The water was about 50 degrees, SE wind 10-15. At first it was sunny and not particularly cold given that we were all bundled up. When the sun went under the clouds at about 1 it got a little cool so we hit the boat for some lunch. My feet were ice cubes which I hadnt even noticed while the fish were biting. We did make a trip back out for another wade in the same spot after sandwiches but nobody even had a bump. We packed it up at about 3pm.
Final tally, Clint 3 slot reds including a perfect tournament red at 27 1/2, me 3 slot reds and a 21" trout and Thomas kept 1 slot red, 2 trout, released a 6#er and a 4#er, and lost one even bigger trout because she swam right at him before she spit the lure. We all caught countless rat reds, many of which were multispots. We didnt catch dink trout though, everything we caught was 21+.
Well, I promised my cork buddies some pictures but I failed in that task, lol. We didnt get any pictures on the water, I have no idea why. When we got back to the house, we decided to all line up in the driveway and put the camera on timer. The stringer got all bunched up so you cant really see the fish but hey, its a picture anyway...lol. See ya at the Fishing Show!
